After three years in the insurance industry and seven years as a litigator in a top-tiered insurance defense firm, the Law Office of John R. Lewis was established in 1996. The practice is devoted to state and federal court civil litigation, primarily defense, in the areas of general liability, premises liability, automobile liability, workers' compensation, employment law, commercial litigation, and general personal injury and insurance defense. 

The firm caters to a small group of large companies, most self-insured or who possess high self-retentions. 80% of the companies represented by John R. Lewis have been clients for at least 20 years. 

John R. Lewis practices across the State of Tennessee and has litigated in 54 of Tennessee's 95 counties, in addition to all three federal districts. 

As a sole practitioner, John R. Lewis is able to provide individualized and personal representation to each of his clients. The firm believes that the goals of each case, as determined by the client, should be well vetted, and a defense plan developed and followed to achieve these goals. Accordingly, the client is kept apprised of all activities and encouraged to provide feedback and direction throughout the life of the case. In cases where the decision is made to litigate, those cases are aggressively litigated. In matters where liability is apparent and early resolution is desired, those cases are postured towards settlement as quickly as possible. In an era where mediation and settlement are as prevalent and popular as litigation, John R. Lewis is equally skilled in negotiation and litigation.
